| (Just east of Madagascar) Two nights and two days was all it took to explore the areas of Mauritius that interested us. The island itself is beautiful, though Michael says it is only ![]() beautiful if you simply like watching sugar cane grow! We stayed in a four bedroom, three bathroom bungalow right on the beach for only $60 a night. It was located in an area called Grand Baie. In our opinion, Grand Baie is one of the finest sites in Mauritius. It is surrounded by calm, clear water, beautiful beaches, with green mountains in the background. Our second day in Mauritius, we rented a scooter and headed to the capital city of Port Louis. We had read that Port Louis was a quaint little city with French colonial styles from the 18th century, but as soon as we entered the city center, we realized that the peaceful image we both had of the city was wrong. It was a dirty city, with lots of tall and small buildings practically touching each other. There were crowds everywhere which made it difficult to move. Quite frankly, it reminded us of Compton back in LA. The only part of Port Louis that we did like was the water front. Here, there is a small shopping center, eating, cinemas, and most importantly - it is clean! While having lunch at the water front, we decided to leave Mauritius early, and get to Seychelles as soon as possible. The next morning, we were on the plane! |
